Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip?
In the US: 15% for acceptable service, 18–20% for good service, 20–25% for excellent. In Europe, 5–10% is standard. In Japan, tipping is not customary and may be considered rude.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Technically, tipping on the pre-tax amount is correct since the tax is not the server's earning. However, in the US most people tip on the post-tax total as it is simpler.
How do I split unequal bills?
This tool splits the total equally. For unequal splits (where people ordered different items), calculate each person's share manually and apply the same tip percentage.
Should I tip on takeaway orders?
For pick-up orders, 10–15% is appreciated but not required. For delivery orders, 15–20% is standard given the driver's travel costs.

Pro Tip

When dining in a group, agree on the tip percentage before calculating to avoid confusion. If service was genuinely poor, speak to the manager rather than reducing the tip — servers rarely control the issues that cause poor experiences.

Did You Know?

1900s
Tipping Arrived in the US
Tipping was brought to the US from Europe in the 1900s. By the 1910s, labour groups were calling to ban it as "un-American" — a custom where workers depended on customer generosity rather than fair wages. The ban failed; tipping became entrenched.
20%
US Tip Expectation in 2024
The expected tip for restaurant service in the US has risen from 15% in the 1980s to 18–20% today. Inflation, wage stagnation and "tip creep" via digital payment prompts have driven this increase.
¥0
Tip in Japan
Tipping is considered insulting in Japan. It implies the server needs charity and disrupts the cultural norm of excellent service as a professional duty (called "omotenashi"). Some restaurants will politely return your tip.

More Questions

Should I tip on the total bill including tax?
Standard practice (especially in the US) is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax goes to the government, not the server. However, tipping on the full post-tax total is common and not incorrect. Some auto-calculated tip prompts use the post-tax total — check before accepting.
How much should I tip for delivery orders?
For delivery: $3–5 for short distances, $5–10 for longer distances or bad weather, 15–20% for large orders. Delivery drivers often earn below minimum wage relying on tips. Unlike restaurant servers, they also bear vehicle costs, insurance and fuel.
What is included in "split evenly" vs individual bills?
"Split evenly" divides the total equally regardless of what each person ordered — simplest but not always fairest. "Individual bills" (separate checks) assigns each person only their items plus a proportional tip. Our calculator splits evenly; for individual bills, use the restaurant's separate check option when ordering.

Common Mistakes

Calculating tip on the tax amount
Some people mistakenly tip on the taxed total without realising. While not wrong, it means you're tipping on money that goes to the government.
Calculate tip on the subtotal (food + drink) for the most accurate amount.
Tipping with foreign currency
Leaving foreign coins or bills as a tip abroad can be worthless to the recipient — many banks won't exchange foreign coins.
Always tip in local currency or add a card tip.
Forgetting to tip the bartender separately
When running a tab, a single tip at the end often goes only to your server. Bartenders who served you directly may receive nothing.
$1–2 per drink or 15–20% of bar tab directly to the bartender.
