How to Play

  • The puzzle: A secret 5-letter English word is hidden. You must figure out what it is.
  • How: Type any valid 5-letter word as a guess and press Enter. The tiles change colour to give you clues about how close you were.
  • Green tile: That letter is in the word AND in exactly the right position.
  • Yellow tile: That letter IS in the word, but you placed it in the wrong position.
  • Gray tile: That letter is NOT in the word at all — eliminate it from future guesses.
  • The challenge: Use the colour clues from each guess to narrow down possibilities with each attempt.
  • Win: Guess the exact word within 6 attempts.
  • Lose: 6 wrong guesses used up — the word is revealed.
  • Key tip: Never guess a gray letter again — it wastes a guess with zero new information.

Common Questions

How do you play Wordle?
Guess a 5-letter word in 6 tries. After each guess: Green = letter is correct and in the right position. Yellow = letter is in the word but in the wrong position. Gray = letter is not in the word at all.
What's the best opening word?
Words covering common letters are best. Popular starters: CRANE (covers C, R, A, N, E), SLATE (S, L, A, T, E), AUDIO (all 5 vowels minus one), RAISE. Mathematically, CRANE and SLATE are among the most efficient opening words.
Can I play more than once per day?
Yes! This is unlimited Wordle — click "New Game" after any game ends to play instantly with a new random word. No waiting for tomorrow's word.
Does it accept any 5-letter input?
Yes — any combination of 5 letters is accepted as a valid guess. This means you can freely explore strategies without being blocked by obscure word validation.

Pro Tip

Don't repeat gray letters and always reuse yellow ones in a different position on your next guess. Two well-chosen words in the first two guesses that collectively cover 10 different common letters will give you enough information to solve almost any word in the remaining four tries.

CRANE
Mathematically Best Opener
Information-theory analysis shows CRANE and SLATE eliminate the most possible words on average. CRANE uses the 5 most statistically advantageous letters given the Wordle answer distribution.

You May Also Ask

Why are some letters yellow sometimes and gray other times?
A letter can only be "present" (yellow) once per actual occurrence in the word. If the word has one E and you guess two E's, only one will be yellow/green — the other will be gray to avoid misleading you about duplicate letters.
What is "hard mode" in Wordle?
In hard mode (NYT version), you must use all revealed hints in subsequent guesses — revealed greens must stay in position and yellows must be used. This prevents the strategy of using all-new letters on guess 2 to eliminate more letters faster.
Can a word have double letters?
Yes! Words like ABBEY, OFFER or LLAMA have repeated letters. This is one reason why seemingly good guesses can fail — the word may have a doubled letter you weren't accounting for.

Common Mistakes

Reusing gray letters
The most common mistake — guessing a letter that was already marked gray. Gray means the letter is definitively not in the word; using it again wastes a guess.
Watch the keyboard — gray keys tell you exactly which letters to avoid.
Ignoring yellow letter positions
Yellow means the letter is in the word but NOT in that position. Guessing it in the same position again is guaranteed to fail.
Place yellow letters in any position except where they turned yellow.
Forgetting about double letters
Players often assume each letter appears only once. Words like SPEED, BOOST and TEETH have doubled letters that trip up even experienced players.
If you've confirmed most letters but can't find the word, consider that one slot may be a duplicate.
